Abstract
791,109. Reservoir pens. SCRIPTO, Inc. Oct. 3, 1956, No. 30178/56. Class 146(3) A plug 10 adapted for insertion at the rear end of a ball-point pen ink reservoir 12 to prevent ink leakage while venting the ink to atmosphere, comprises a single flexible plastic element having an intermediate shank portion 14 connecting mating end portions 16, 18 of complementary circular segment cross-section, with at least one end portion having a groove 26 extending throughout the length thereof and of smaller cross-section than will allow ink to flow therethrough. The cross. sectional area of the groove 26 is preferably not more than 0.000006 square inches, and it may be as small as 0.000002 square inches, and it is formed during the moulding of the plug by means of a knife-like projection in the mould. The plug is of polyethylene, vinyl plastics or rubber, and is folded on itself so that mating halves 16, 18 produce a cylindrical plug. The portion 16 has a recess 22 into which fits a locating lug 24 on the portion 18. Such a small air vent 26 will prevent the leakage of ink under all conditions. The plug 10 may be used in conjunction with a grease seal which follows the ink column, and with inks having a viscosity of from 3,000 to 12,000 centipoises at 77‹F.
