Abstract
The invention comprises a process for the activation of aluminium by heating it with alkyl or aryl aluminium halides of the formula RR1AlX, R and R1 being alkyl or aryl and X being halogen, whereafter the activated product may be isolated or used to react with carbon tetrachloride, for example to give hexachlorethane. In examples the aluminium is activated in the form of drillings, flakes or powder, by heating with diethylaluminium chloride or di-iso-butylaluminium chloride in presence of heptane, cyclohexane, decane and decahydronaphthalene or other inert hydrocarbons; other dialkyl aluminium chlorides are specified; the activated aluminium is used to convert carbon tetrachloride to hexachloroethane.
