Abstract
790,603. Hydrodynamic couplings. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 14, 1956 [Sept. 12, 1955], No. 24821/56. Class 69 (2). Liquid can be supplied to a hydrodynamic coupling between the inner peripheries of an impeller P and a turbine T and exhausted from between the outer peripheries, the back of the turbine carrying vanes 42 to direct the liquid to exhaust valves 28. Valves 28 are normally maintained open by springs 54 aided by centrifugal force, and are closed by applying hydraulic pressure through a passage 30 to act on the top of heads 48 of the valves to thus close exhaust passages 40. The turbine shell may be stamped from sheet metal and the turbine blades 21 be formed with tabs seating in depressions 60 and a channel 66 formed in the shell, and the tabs be welded to the shell. The tabs are so set that the blades are inclined backwardly relative to the. direction of rotation of the turbine. Balance weights can be selectively added to the blades to control vibration. The impeller blades are formed similarly. The vanes 42 are formed integrally on a ring_ which is secured to the turbine. In a modification the turbine shell is cast and has blades 21 and vanes 42 integral therewith.
