789,681. Feeding or delivering sheets. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., EDWARDS, A., and PECK, H. May 10, 1956 [May 18, 1955], No. 14360/55. Class 100(1) A sheet feeding apparatus for a printing machine comprising a number of spaced suction rollers 3 secured to a shaft 2, in conjunction with a transverse guide plate 19 mounted tangentially to the rollers in order to prevent buckling of the paper sheets between the spaced rollers. For use in separating sheets from a pile (not shown), the rollers are disposed above the pile and the top sheet is floated up into contact with the rotating rollers by an air blast, the guide plate keeping the sheet in flat condition. The shaft 2 is mounted in bearings 5 in brackets 6 clamped to a hollow shaft 7. The open end of each roller 3 faces, and is adjacent to, a bracket 6, and a tubular pin 9 on each bracket projects into a roller. The pin 9 carries a block 10 which is urged by a spring 11 against the inside surface of the roller. Suction ducts 13 in the block 10 communicate with the hollow shaft 7 through the pin 9 and a duct 14 in the bracket 6, and the shaft 7 is connected to a source of vacuum. The stationary block 10 co-operates with holes 12 in the roller 3. Each duct 14 can be closed by a valve 15 which is normally held in the raised position by a spring 18'. The guide plate 19 is secured to the brackets 6 and extends to the full width of the apparatus. It has a bevelled edge 20 close to and substantially parallel with the peripheries of the rollers.
