Abstract

789,163. Ropes &c. BRITISH ROPES, Ltd. April 30, 1954 [May 5, 1953, Feb. 4, 1954], Nos. 12494/53 and 3347/54. Drawings to Specification,. Class 109 [Also in Group VIII] A rope, rope splice, rope strand or rope core is characterized in that the interior spaces between the wires or fibres are filled with a gelled thermoplastic material. The ropes, splices, strands or cores, may be vacuum impregnated with a plastic in the form of a viscous liquid which is subsequently caused to undergo setting or gelation to a solid which is flexible over a wide temperature range. The plastic material may be disposed in a plasticizer to form a paste together with stabilizers, extenders or fillers. A specified plastic is polyvinyl chloride; specified plasticizers are dioctyl phthalate and di-octyl sebacate. The rope may have an extruded plastic core or a core formed of a wire spiral or stand over which is a plastic sheath. The wire strand may be of high tensile steel or of tinned copper wire or of tinned copper wires and steel wires mixed. The core may be built up of layers of different plastics. The surface of the plastic core may be armoured with steel wires and then sheathed or impregnated with plastic.
