Abstract

1486227 Light guides STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 5 Dec 1974 52596/74 Heading G2J A communication cable comprises at least one optical fibre sheathed in a plastics material which has a plurality of longitudinal reinforcing members embedded in it. The material may be high density polyethylene or polypropylene or polyethylene glycoltere phthalate, and the members may be brass-plated steel wire or polyamide fibres. In making the cable, the reinforcing members are under tensile load during extrusion of the plastics material so that they retract, e.g. by 1% of their length, on being delivered from the extruder, so that the optical fibres are longer than the members in the final cable.
