Abstract

1,156,975. Ropes; braid. AMERICAN MFG. CO., Inc. 26 July, 1966 [26 July, 1965], No. 33520/66. Headings D1K and D1T. A. rope having low stretch properties has the core of at least one strand thereof composed of a plurality of initially untwisted inwardly compressed, elongate plastics members stretched to at least six times .their initial extruded length, the plastics members in the resulting core having a twist determined by subsequent twist imparted to the strand. In Fig. 3 bands 15 of linear isotactic polypropylene, that have been stretched eight or ten times their initial extruded length, are fed through a die 16 that crushes the bands in a manner causing them to split longitudinally. The crushed bands 15 are then fed with pre-twisted yarns 12 to a die 17, the output of which passes around capstan reels 19 and 21 mounted on rods 20, 22 rotated in a counterclockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 3. This produces a strand with a Z-twist, Three or more of these strands may be "laid up" into a completed rope. The outer pretwisted yarns 12 may be of polypropylene or polyethylene and may be applied in any desired number of layers. The bands 15 may be replaced by highlyoriented monofilaments or untwisted multifilaments of plastics material and to obtain minimum void space in the core their crosssections may be square or triangular. The ropes resulting from the invention may be plaited or "square braided."
