A. MAZZELLA METHOD OF PRODUCING HOISTING SLINGS Filed March 11, 1947 v INVENTOR! A/Z tomb Mazzella ATTORNEYS I Patented Jan. 27, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI CE METHOD OF PRODUCING HOISTING SLINGS Antonio Mazzella, New Haven, Conn. Application March 11, 1947, Serial No. 733,972
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to an improved method of producing hoisting slings.
An object of the invention is to provide a holsting sling having a highdegree of flexibility, being non-kinking and possessing a high degree of lifting capacity and tensile strength.
An object of the invention is to provide a braided sling which will wear from the outside only, and is more durable than a twisted sling.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of elements more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of one of the steps in the formation of the completed sling shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional viw on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 and Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral I!) generally designates a flexible cable constructed of wire, which has been twisted three times. The opposite ends of the cable ID are looped and suitably fastened to the cable Ill at I I and I2 respectively to form primary eyes l3 and I4, respectively.
The next step in this method of forming slings is practiced by folding the cable l0 into five members [5, l6, I1, l8 and I9 as shown in Figure 2, and the members are so formed that the extreme ends 20. 2 I, 22 and 23 of the looped portions thereof terminate at the extreme ends of the eyes [3 and I4.
Subsequent to thus forming the cable, the looped ends are pinched together at a point in alinement with the fastened ends II and I2 of the loops I3 and I4, and. the members I5, [6, l1, l8 and I 9 in a five rope braid, as shown in Figure 1, and a thimble or eye 24 is used to hold the loop and primary eyes in fixed relation to each other.
The loop and eyes thus formed are wrapped at their extremity by a suitable material 25 to form a five strand braided sling.
The steps of the method may be used to form slings of greater strength by using more members to form a greater number of braids.
Through practice of this method, it is apparent that a sling will be provided that will accomplish the objects of the invention, and it is to be understood that certain minor details in the method above described may be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
The method of constructing a hoisting sling, consisting of primarily forming a three twist flexible cable, forming primary eyes on the opposite ends of said cable, folding the cable to form five members of equal length, pinching the loops at the ends of the members to conform with the eyes on the cable, placing said loop in registry with said eyes, and braiding said members to form a five braid sling, securing said loops and said eyes in fixed relation to each other by a thimble and then wrapping the sling with suitable material below the extremity of said loops and e es.
