Abstract
1378444 Hose GATES RUBBER CO 13 Sept 1972 [13 Sept 1971] 42551/72 Heading F2P A hose (of the kind comprising a polymeric tubular structure reinforced by at least two braided reinforcement layers wherein the reinforcement layers are separated by insulator material), is characterized by the nature of the braiding wherein the inner braided layer comprises a plurality of tension resistant strands 18 (Fig. 1) wound in one helical direction and a lesser number of zero twist textile strands 20 wound in the opposite helical direction and interwoven with the tension resistant strands, all the tension resistant strands being wound at substantially the same helical diameter and being substantially crimp free at the points of crossover with the zero twist strands (see Fig. 3) and the second braided layer is of similar construction to the first with the exception that the tension resistant strands 32 (Fig. 1) and zero twist strands 34 are wound in the opposite sense to the corresponding strands of the inner braided layer. It is stated that such a construction ensures that the tension resistant strands behave as substantially unbraided helical windings when the hose is complete whereas the zero twist strands impart the advantages of stability of a braid during the construction of the hose and prevent fraying of the reinforcement when the hose is severed. The construction allows the ideal spiral angle of 54 degrees 44 minutes to be achieved. The strands of tension resistant material are preferably of wire but textile material may be used. The polymeric material may be rubber or plastics, and the inner lining layer may be extruded on to a rigid or flexible mandrel. The outer cover and/or insulator may be extruded or helically wound and the completed hose may be sheathed in lead and vulcanized.
