Abstract

One or each of a pair of rollers is reduced in diameter between its ends to form an annular recess so that, when the ends of the rollers are urged into contact, a gap remains between them. The rollers are used to reduce thickness variations in sheet material, particularly thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride, which is unwound from a roll, passed through a heating zone, drawn between the rollers, cooled and wound on another roll. The speed of rotation of, and pressure between, the rollers are suitable for smoothing the sheet to a constant thickness equal to the gap. Cooling water may be passed through the rollers. The invention has particular application to plastic sheet which is to be coated with magnetisable material, but is also applicable to the rolling of ductile metal sheet.
