Abstract

Transparent packaging film is made by extruding a continuous film of molten thermoplastic polymer on to a continuous preformed sheet of material different from the thermoplastic film, pressing the film against the sheet at the point where they are brought into contact, and contacting the film with a chill roll maintained at a temperature below the melting point of the film and having an overall surface roughness of 4-20 micro inches due to the presence of 2X104 - 12X106 hemispheroidal indentations, of diameter 50-1500 micro inches, per square inch of roll surface, the indentations being separated by highly polished areas having a mirror finish. In an Example, molten polyethylene containing 0,2% erucamide as lubricant is extruded downwardly into the nip of two rolls between which a sheet of regenerated cellulose is passing. (Specification 688,637) One of the rolls is a chromium plated chill roll at 65 DEG C. bearing the required number and size of indentations, so that the polyethylene coating of the sheet is impressed with nodules corresponding to the indentations.
