Abstract

875,737. Rollers. BTR INDUSTRIES Ltd., and BIRKIN, B. G. Jan. 12, 1960 [Jan. 16, 1959], No. 1726/59. Class 42 (2). A pickling roller comprises a shaft of, or coated with, a corrosion-resistant material, a roll or rolls also of or coated with, corrosion-resistant material fitted over the shaft and rotatable thereon and bearing rollers or balls of, or coated with, corrosionresistant material between the roll or rolls and the shaft. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the roller has a fixed shaft 16 of steel with an adherent sheath 17 of ebonite over its surface except for the end spigots 15. Over the sheath 17 is fitted a renewable sheath also of ebonite and formed of sections 18. Around each sheath 18 is a sleeve or roll 23 also of ebonite and having grooves 25 in which run ebonite roller bearings 26. In another construction the rolls 23 are constructed as hollow annular mild steel cores covered with ebonite. The periphery of rolls 23 may be formed with tyres of softer wear and shock-resistant rubber. Other corrosion-resistant materials mentioned are polypropylene, polytetrafluorethylene, polyethylene, rigid polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylate, resin-bonded glass fibres and the shaft may be of stainless steel.
