Abstract

788,614. Variable capacitors. BRITISH DIELECTRIC RESEARCH, Ltd. June 27, 1956 [June 28, 1955], No. 18721/55. Class 37. In a variable capacitor, inter-electrode spacing is reduced by coating one or both sets of plates with a non- hygroscopic, moisture-repellent insulating material having a low coefficient of friction with itself or with metal. As shown, the edges of the interleaving portions are rounded by mechanical, chemical or electro-chemical polishing or may be etched away after coating. The plates may be from 0.01 to 0.1 inch thick, of porous metal, or may be surface-etched to provide a key. Aluminium plates may be anodised. The insulating coating may take the form of polytetrafluoroethylene latex which is afterwards sintered. The coating and sintering processes can be repeated alternately to provide greater thickness; any edge etching is carried out after sintering the first coating. Alternatively, high or low density polyethylene may be applied in molten state or in the form of a solution at elevated temperature. The coatings are preferably 0.125 to 10 mil. thick.
