Abstract

730,160. Electrolytic capacitors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 2, 1953, No. 27063/53. Class 37. An electrolytic capacitor comprises an electrode of titanium, converted during manufacture into titanium nitride on one surface, and a. second electrode of aluminium separated from the nitride layer by an electrolyte. In the embodiment shown, the nitride layer 3 on titanium electrode 2 formed by heating in nitrogen at a temperature not exceeding 800‹ C., is spaced from the aluminium electrode 5 by a layer 4 of absorbent material such as paper carrying an electrolyte consisting of glycol and triethanolamine borates, the whole being contained between sheets 1 and 6 of paper impregnated with styrene which are fused together at their edges by heating. If the temperature during the nitriding process does not exceed 800‹ C. a firmly adherent layer of nitride is formed which is unharmed by a subsequent process, in which the capacitor is embedded in or moulded into a base-plate of thermoplastic or thermosetting insulating material by pressure.
