Abstract
1,230,403. Electrets. THERMO ELECTRON CORP. 2 April, 1968 [15 May, 1967], No. 54356/70. Divided out of 1,230,402. Heading H1M. In the manufacture of an electret, a film 1 of thermoplastic dielectric material is supported within furnace 3 between electrode 5 in contact with one surface and grid electrode 7 spaced from the other surface, the material is heated to a softening temperature and a D.C. potential applied between the electrodes while an ionized gas is provided between film 1 and electrode 7 and, after the material has become charged, it is cooled to room temperature while maintaining the field and ionized gas. As shown the furnace may be heated by induction coil 11 which also ionizes the air or other gas in the furnace. The bulk polarized material may be given a surface charge by increasing the D.C. bias in the presence of ionized gas, or by rubbing the film with material of opposite charge selectivity. The film 1 may be polycarbonate, polysulphone, polyimide, polyhalocarbon, polyphenylene oxide, polyvinylidene oxide or copolymers thereof. The film may have a surface coating of polystyrene, polyhalocarbon or polyvinylidene chloride or copolymer of their monomers to improve the surface charge. Electrode 5 may be a metallized layer. For use in a transducer the formed electret has a metallized layer or is bonded to a metal film.
