Abstract

788,499. Step-by-step conveyers. BAKER PERKINS, Ltd. May 10, 1956 [May 18, 1955], No. 14552/56. Class 78 (1). A conveyer means comprises endless conveyer chains H, I, which are driven such that each article is confined between a lug 18 on one chain serving as a retaining lug and a lug 21 on the other chain serving as a pushing lug whereby each lug serves alternately as a pushing lug for one article and then as a retaining lug for the next article. As shown, moulds A, B, C containing rows of cavities 3, 4, 5 are pushed by chains H, I step-by-step under a row of nozzles 67 from which material is fed from hopper G. The chains derive their movements from respective ratchet units 100 and 101. Ratchet unit 100 includes a ratchet 60 and ratchet 38. Ratchet unit 101 includes a ratchet 37 and ratchet 59, the ratchet unit 100 being freely mounted upon shaft 42 and driving chain I through sprocket 49, chain 50 and sprocket 51, and ratchet unit 101 being fixed to shaft 42 and driving chain H through sprocket 43, chain 44 and sprocket 45. Pawl 36 drives both ratchets 38 and 37, whilst pawl 57 drives ratchet 59 and pawl 58 drives ratchet 60. Pawls 57 and 58 derive their movement from follower 54 governed by cam 30, whilst pawl 36 derives its movement from the follower 32 governed by cam 29, both cams being continuously rotated by driving shaft 28. Each ratchet unit therefore receives a separate movement from each of the two cams which causes the chains to push successive moulds in turn and also to compensate for the space between moulds.
