Abstract
788,104. Drills. MODERN HARDMETALS, Ltd. Jan. 2, 1956 [Oct. 1, 1954], No. 28286/54. Class 83 (3). A rotary rock-drilling bit comprises main cutting tips 16 of tungsten-carbide &c. extending to the full radius of the hole to be drilled, a pilot drill 12 with tips 18 of only a small fraction of the radius of the main tips, and flutes 21 in the pilot drill leading directly into flutes 17 between the main-tips. The pilot drill, secured in a parallel or tapered socket in the main drill 10 as by a cotter 14, may be formed entirely from high-speed, or alloy, steel or have an inserted tip 19 separated into two cutting tips 18 by a central, or off-centre, notch 20, a driving shoulder on the pilot engaging a slot 15 in the drill 10. The tips 18 are out of axial alignment with the main tips 16 and may be rounded adjacent the notch 20, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown). Liquid, e.g. water, is fed through a central passage to exit holes 25 in the drill 10 and to holes 23 located adjacent the tips of the pilot, and elsewhere along the pilot if required.
