Abstract
787,987. Magnetic amplifiers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and JEANS, G. L. G. March 30, 1955 [April 9, 1954], No. 10549/54. Class 40 (4). A self-excited magnetic amplifier comprises two saturable inductors 10 and 11 connected to form a bridge with rectifiers 12 and 13, the bridge being connected in series with a load and energized by A.C. applied to terminals 14 and 17, self-excitation of the amplifier being controlled by a variable impedance connected across terminals 20 and 21. During alternate half-cycles of the A.C. supply one inductor is driven to saturation while the other is reset by current shunted through the variable impedance. The output of the amplifier is controlled solely by the value of the impedance and may be rectified at 28 and applied to a resistor 29, the voltage across which may be used to control a second stage of amplification comprising the inductors 30, 31, and rectifiers 32, 33, energized by A.C. across terminals 34, 37, and supplying a load 16. The rectifier 28 may be coupled to the first stage by means of a stepup transformer thereby isolating the two stages and permitting the use of the same A.C. supply for both stages.
