Abstract

787,862. Jet propulsion plant. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. July 8, 1955 [July 27, 1954], No. 19867/55. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] In a jet deflecting device comprising a set of deflecting vanes 6 surrounding the normal jet path, at least some of the vanes 6 are removably secured to the jet propulsion unit by a single ring fastening means other than a wire ring. In Fig. 1, the jet issuing from the nozzle 1 passes through a curved member 5 to which the boundary layer of the jet tends to adhere. Removably or fixedly secured to member 5 is a member 5a forming a continuation of substantially greater curvature. The vanes 6 are mounted on a series of circumferentially spaced rods 13 (Fig. 2), being spaced by spacers 14 and secured by a nut on the downstream end of each rod, the upstream ends being secured to a ring 11. This ring is flanged at 11b, and is coupled to a flange 7a on a cylindrical member 7 extending forward from the jet propulsion unit, by a U-shaped ring 8, which is formed in two halfcircles, see Fig. 3 (not shown), for easy assembly. Controllable obstacles 4 for initiating deflection of the jet may be removable with the vanes 6, or may be attached to the jet propulsion unit. Each vane 6 may be removable in two halves, being divided in a diametral plane. A cylindrical collar 3 extends between the nozzle 1 and member 5. The cylindrical member 7 is apertured at 7b, 7c, to permit a flow of cooling air set up by the ejector action of collar 3 and member 7. Specifications 750,623 and 751,317 are referred to.
