Abstract

787,837. Transformers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 10, 1955, No. 13485/55. Class 38 (2). An alternating current regulating device has in each phase A, B, C two pairs of coils 1, 3 and 2, 4, the coils 1, 2 being primary coils and connected in series aiding relationships; the coils 3, 4 being secondary windings and connected in series opposition, a movable short-circuited coil 5 being provided which is moved in turn into inductive relationship with the pair of coils 1, 3 and 2, 4 whereby by changing the position of the movable coil 5 the output A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>1</SP> of the device is varied slowly and continuously between. zero voltage and a maximum voltage, whilst the device is supplied with a constant input voltage. The primary and secondary coils are represented in Fig. 2 by 6a, 6b, 6c, the movable coils 5b, 5c being mechanically secured together by means of straps 9, 10, the coils 5b, 5c being movable together with coil 5a by means of a sprocket chain 11. Movement of the coils is effected by means of an electric motor 13, a clutch 15 and a sprocket chain 17. When the coil 5a is at the top of its column and the coils 5b, 5c at the bottoms of their columns, the output of the device is zero (by virtue of the fact that the minimum voltage from the coil 3 is made equal to the maximum voltage from the coil 4) whilst the maximum output position is as shown in Fig. 2. When in the maximum output position the device acts as a constant voltage regulator by the provision of an astatic relay which determines any small voltage changes and causes the motor 13 to operate to eliminate the changes. When a fault occurs, the clutch 15 releases and the device returns quickly to the zero position by the influence of gravity on the coils 5b, 5c. The coil 5a is also attached to the coils 5b, 5c by means of a centrally pivoted member so that the coil 5a returns to the top of its column under fault conditions even if the chain 11 fractures. The coils will be returned to the minimum voltage position by magnetic forces should the clutch stick. Start and stop switches-either manual or automatic-are provided. Specification 787,838 is referred to.
