Abstract

787,838. Supply systems for consumption apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 10, 1955, No. 11492/57. Divided out of 787,837. Drawings to Specification. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). Electrical power supply equipment for a complex load such as a broadcast radio transmitter comprises an alternating current regulating device of the moving coil type which incorporates driving means for moving the movable coils from a first position to a second position with a slow continuous movement; release means being provided so that the movable coils may move rapidly from the second position to the first; a switch for starting the driving means; direct connections from the regulator to the circuits comprising the load wherein each circuit is provided with an overload relay effective to control the release means. Closure of the starting switch energizes a clutch and an electric motor then slowly drives the movable coils from the first position in which, when a substantially constant voltage is applied to the device, the output voltage thereof is zero to the second position in which the output voltage is a maximum. At this position means such as an astatic relay function to keep the output voltage constant. Should a fault occur or one of the overload relays operate the clutch becomes de-energized, thereby allowing the movable coils to move rapidly from the second position to the first (zero voltage) position, this movement taking place due to the gravitational forces, or the magnetic forces, acting on the coils. Operation of a stop mechanism results in a similar movement of the coils to the zero voltage position. In the embodiment shown, one of the circuits of the complex load has a voltage injected therein by means of an injection transformer so that the voltage applied thereto begins at a value above zero. The regulating device is described and claimed in Specification 787,837 from which Application the present Application has been divided.
