Abstract
787,801. Hop, bean or pea picking machines. SHOTTON, W. E. May 4, 1955 [Feb. 4, 1954], No. 3282/54. Class 6(3). A machine for picking hops, beans or peas comprises a pair of parallel picking rotors carried on oppositely rotating axles 1 and 2, Fig. 3. Each rotor has two end-discs 4 supporting spindles 5 carrying picking tines 8. Each spindle is rotated once, during each rotation of its rotor, by cam mechanism comprising an arm 10 secured to each spindle and a roller 11 carried on the arm and running in a cam-track 12 between outer and inner walls 13 and 14 of a cam-plate 15. Each tine may be secured to the flange 7a of a channelled member 7 secured to a flat part of a spindle. Alternatively, each tine may have a sleeve, which passes over a spindle and is secured thereto by a screw. The machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2 has a chassis 19, and two chain conveyers 24 provided with hooks 23 for carrying hop &c. bines 16 between picking rotors 1 and 2. Each conveyer 24 passes round idle sprockets 27, over curved guides 28, under a low central sprocket 29, over curved guides 26 and round driving sprockets 25. A belt 31 directs the bines towards the picking rotors. Picked hops &c. fall on to spaced rollers 23a and then on to a conveyer 33, which delivers them on to an inclined pocket conveyer 34. This deposits them on rollers 35 through which they fall on to conveyers 36 which deliver them into a bagging hopper 37.
