[Also in Group XXX] Cigarettes are transferred between a first fluted drum (not shown) supplied with cigarettes from a pair of cigarette machines to a second fluted drum 5 for feeding a filter-tip applying machine by a conveyer consisting of a pair of chains 1, 1<SP>1</SP> running on sprocket wheels 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, respectively, which are coaxial with the respective drums, the chains each carrying troughed elements M, M<SP>1</SP> so arranged that they lift the cigarettes from the flutes in the first drum and deposit them in coaxial pairs in the flutes of the second drum. Where the cigarette machines supply the first drum alternately, i.e. one cigarette being supplied to a flute at one side of the drum and the next cigarette being supplied to the next flute at the other side of the drum so that the cigarettes will be carried in alternate elements M or M<SP>1</SP> of each chain, one chain is deflected relative to the other chain by a tensioning wheel (Fig. 4, not shown) whereby pairs of cigarettes Z, Z<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, arrive in alignment in the grooves of the second drum. The drum 5 is mounted on a spindle 6 driven by the filter-tip machine, and outer toothed members 4, 4<SP>1</SP> providing recesses to receive the outer ends of the cigarettes Z, Z<SP>1</SP>, the inner ends of these cigarettes being received in toothed flanges on the body 5. The sprocket wheels 3, 3<SP>1</SP> are arranged between the members 4, 4<SP>1</SP> and the body 5, the assembly being secured by bolts. Guides 11, 12 and 11<SP>1</SP>, 121 engage the ends of the cigarettes Z and Z<SP>1</SP> respectively as they are delivered to the second drum. Grooves 19 are provided in a central flange of the drum body 5 to receive filter tips 18 at the point F, Fig. 1. The assemblies each consisting of two cigarettes and interposed filter tip are transferred from the second drum to the drum 22 of the filter-tip machine by fingers 20. The pitch T1 of the elements M, M<SP>1</SP> on the chains is less than the pitch T2 of the grooves in the members 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, the arrangement being such that the troughs in the elements M, M<SP>1</SP> are clear of the cigarettes after deposition of the latter on the second drum. The troughs in the elements M, M<SP>1</SP> are each formed by a circular depression 201 having a rearward lip 16<SP>1</SP> and a forwardly extruding sloping surface.
