Abstract

787,683. Positive clutches. FIAT SOC. PER AZIONI. July 15, 1955 [July 26, 1954], No. 20598/55. Class 80 (2). The impeller 1 and turbine 2 of a fluid coupling can be locked together by sliding axially a clutch sleeve 6 on a driven shaft 3 to engage its peripheral teeth 21 with teeth 22 on a clutch member 4 fast with the impeller, movement of a lever 8 fulcrumed at 16 causing the clutch engagement, a forked plate 31 adjustably secured to a housing 12 limiting the throw of the lever. To adjust the position of the clutch sleeve 6 on assembly of the clutch, the lever 8 is put into the disengaged position, when the slidable clutch sleeve 6 touches a packing member 26. A mark 36 is then made on the casing against a notch 33 at the edge of the plate 31, which is secured to the casing by screws 32 in a slot. A second notch 34 is provided on the edge of the plate 31, at a predetermined distance from the notch 33 such that sliding the plate 31 along until the reference mark 36 coincides with this second notch will cause the form arm 35 of the plate to pivot the lever 8, and withdraw the clutch sleeve 6 slightly from the packing member 26 to a correctly aligned position where it is also free of the clutch member 4. The plate 31 is then secured by the screws 32. The lever 8 has a forked end engaging a half-ring 9 sliding in a groove in the clutch sleeve 6, and is pivoted on operation of a handle 38 acting through a spring 23 and a link 14. The end faces of the clutch teeth 21, 22 are bevelled, so that if they are not correctly positioned when the control lever 38 is moved to engage them, the spring 23 is loaded and, as soon as relative rotation between the clutch members 4, 6 occurs, the spring then slides them into engagement. Lubricant is contained in a chamber 25 surrounding the clutch member, and is supplied thereto through gaps 24 from a housing 11, surrounding part of the lever 8 &c. and provided with a vent 30.
