Abstract
The invention comprises biguanides of the formula: <FORM:0787620/IV (b)/1> in which at least one of the radicals R1-R4 is an organic residue, preferably a hydrocarbon residue and at least one of the two radicals X is a chlorine atom, the remaining radicals R and X being hydrogen atoms, and their preparation by treating a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0787620/IV (b)/2> with hypochlorous acid in aqueous acid solution or suspension. The hypochlorous acid is suitably made by passing chlorine into the solution. Examples Examples describe the preparation of mono and dichloro derivatives of 1:1-dimethyl biguanide, 1:1 - diethyl biguanide, 1 - p - chlorophenyl biguanide, 1 - p - methoxyphenyl biguanide and 1:1:5:5 - tetramethyl biguanide. Starting materials. The biguanides used as starting materials are made by the reaction of primary or secondary amines R1, R2, NH with dicyandiamide. 1:1:5:5 - Tetramethylbiguanide is made by heating copper dicyandiamide with dimethylamine in water under pressure at 120-125 DEG C.
