Abstract

A moulded battery separator is made from a mixture of a hard siliceous gel, for example silica gel or diatomaceous earth, and up to 15 per cent of an organic binding agent. The latter may consist of a solution, emulsion or dispersion of polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride resin, polyvinyl chloride-acetate copolymer or acrylic resin to which a non-solvent of the binder may be added, for example acetone, alcohol or ether. Small quantities of glass fibres and other fillers may be added. The mixture is placed in a mould and compressed at 500 lbs. per square inch.
