Abstract

A method of producing electrically conductive material of substantially uniform resistivity below 50 ohm-centimetres, comprises incorporating in a synthetic resin a predetermined quantity of an acetylene black having a predetermined and uniform A.S. value. The A.S. value (Absorption Stiffness) is defined in the Specification as the number of c.c.s. of a certain class of liquids which will just cause 5 grams of the black to adhere together under standard conditions, and is a measure of the "structure" of the black. The preferred blacks have an A.S. value of 17-40 and they should be incorporated with the minimum of milling to avoid damage to this "structure." The synthetic resins may be phenol-formaldehyde, polyvinyl butyral or polyvinyl acetate and acetone and methanol may also be added.ALSO:A method of producing electrically conductive material of substantially uniform resistivity below 50 ohm-centimetres, comprises incorporating in a plastic matrix consisting of natural and synthetic rubber and resins a predetermined quantity of an acetylene black having a predetermined and uniform A.S. value. The A.S. value (absorption stiffness) is defined in the Specification as the number of c.c.s. of a certain class of liquids which will just cause 5 grams of the black to adhere together under standard conditions, and is a measure of the "structure" of the black. The preferred blacks have an A.S. value of 17-40 and they should be incorporated with the minimum of milling to avoid damage to the "structure." The matrix may be natural rubber, neoprene or natural resin; and substances such as zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, phenyl b -naphthylamine, hexamethylene ammonium, hexamethylene dithiocarbamate, hydrogenated gasoline and toluol may also be added.
