Abstract
A battery separator is moulded from a mixture of a hard siliceous gel and a soft compressible silica, a binder and a foaming agent that gives off gas when heated. The gel may consist of diatomaceous earth or gels prepared by acidification of soluble silicates. The binder may consist of synthetic resins for example vinylidene chloride or acrylic emulsions and the foaming agent may comprise ammonium stearate and ammonium hydroxide. Glass fibres and a wetting agent may be added to the mixture which after moulding and drying may be rolled to the required thickness. In an example the mixture consists of 30 parts of hard silica gel, 12 parts of finely divided silica, 50 parts water, the remainder consisting of the binder, foaming agent and glass fibres. Specification 787,074 is referred to.ALSO:A battery separator is moulded from a mixture of a hard siliceous gel and a soft compressible silica, a binder and a foaming agent that gives off gas when heated.
