Abstract

678,719. Accumulators. GLASFLOSS CORPORATION. June 15, 1949 [July 9, 1948], No. 15941/49. Drawings to Specification. Class 53. A separator for the electrodes of a storage battery which serves also as a retainer for the active material consists of a mat of glass fibres arranged approximately vertically and coated on one side with a layer of finely-divided inorganic material, for example diatomaceous earth, silica, or pulverized glass fibres, with or without a proportion of wood flour. The glass mat may be bonded with starch or a phenolic resin such as polystyrene and the layer of powdered inorganic material may be applied as a suspension in water or a plastic material such as a phenol formaldehyde resin to which may be added a colloid such as ammonium alginate. The coating may be spread over the glass mat by a roller coater or by flowing it over the mat and passing the latter under a doctor blade. The mat may be made by spinning glass fibres on to a rotating drum and cutting through the resulting mass. The uncoated face of the mat may be formed with shallow corrugations and the completed separator may be sprayed with a solution of starch containing glycerine. Specification 537,377, [Group VIII], is referred to.
