Abstract

1425032 Carbon fibre reinforced cement beam; laminates COURTAULDS Ltd 8 June 1973 [10 March 1972] 11232/72 Headings B5A and B5N [Also in Divisions D1-D2] A tow of parallel carbon filaments is bonded by a water soluble binder to form a flexible tape, the tape passed through an aqueous cement dispersion, 25 cm. lengths are cut from the band, stacked in a mould and compression moulded to form a beam having carbon filaments aligned parallel to its longitudinal axis. A tow of 10,000 carbon filaments of diameter 8-9 microns is spread by an air box spreader or by diverging liquid flow to form a band one filament thick. An aqueous solution of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol or styrene-maleic anhydride polymer hydrolysed with aqueous ammonia is applied to the tow or to the shaped band by dripping, padding or spraying. The impregnated band may be heated to cure the binder and collected as a wound package.
