Abstract
1424168 Non-woven fabric KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK and TOYO BOSEKI KK 28 March 1974 [28 March 1973] 13884/74 Heading D1R A sheet or tape prepeg is prepared by impregnating a fibrous structure with an aqueous dispersion having a viscosity of not more than 30000 cps (e.g. 50 to 10000 cps) comprising 1 to 60% by weight of 0.1 to 100Á particles of a synthetic resin having a melting point in water or in the dry state of 60 to 100C, heating the impregnated structure to a temperature of 60 to 100C to melt the resin and adhere it to the fibres and then squeezing the impregnated structure to remove water. The structure may be a tow, roving or mat of glass, carbon or synthetic organic fibres or of a mixture thereof. The resin may be a phenolic, epoxy, diallyl phthalate, xylene, furon or urea resin, polyamide copolymer, polyvinyl acetate or a polyester, or a natural or synthetic resin. The dispersion may also contain 0.1 to 5% of a thickening agent selected from polyacrylic acid or a salt thereof, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene oxide ,polyacrylamide, volyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyethylene imine, polyvinyl methyl ether and methyl cellulose. In example 1 10% by wt. of a novalak phenol-aldehyde resin and 5% of hexamethylenediamine were dispersed in an aqueous solution of sodium polyacrylate. A carbon fibre tow was impregnated with 10 times its weight of the liquor, heated to 90C using a bar infrared heater, squeezed between rollers to remove 90% of the water and dried. A prepeg with a high void content and containing aggregated particles as a matrix can be obtained by employing a dispersion containing a small amount of the specified low-melting resin and a large amount of another particulate resin.
