Abstract

1425031 Cement-impregnated carbon fibre laminates COURTAULDS Ltd 8 June 1973 [10 March 1972] 11230/72 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions D1-D2 and E1] Fibrous structures comprise parallel carbon filaments in a cement binder, 10,000 carbon filaments of diameter 8-9 microns are surface treated by making them the anode of a cell having 10% sodium hydroxide as electrolyte and forming into a tow. In Example 1 the tow is formed into a uniform 5 cm. wide one filament thick band in an air-box spreader and passed through a dip bath comprising an aqueous dispersion of sub 45 micron diameter cement particles. 25 cm. lengths are cut from the dipped band, stacked in a mould and compressed to form a beam having carbon filaments aligned longitudinally. In Example 2 a similar tow is spread by suspending it in a stream of water which diverges in a fish tail device, a water soluble size being applied during or after the spreading, as described in Specification 1,425,032, which lists sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose polyvinyl alcohol and a hydrolysed styrenemaleic anhydride polymer as suitable binders. The sized band is cut into 25 cm. lengths and the lengths laid in a mould, an aqueous cement dispersion being applied to each layer. The laminate was covered and damp cured at room temperature for 7 days.
