Abstract
1458211 Mulch made from tree-bark J R AARON A COURTS and B W HOLTAM 9 Jan 1974 [17 Jan 1973] 2464/73 Heading C1B A composite material for use as a horticultural mulch comprises tree bark in subdivided fibrous form bonded into a coherent mass by a minor proportion by weight of a biologically degradable nitrogenous binder wherein the bark fibres have lengths between 0À025 and 3 inches and in which at least half of the fibres have an aspect ratio of at least 2 : 1; and may be obtained by a process comprising intermixing tree bark in subdivided fibrous form with a water-soluble animal glue in granular solid form and compressing the resulting admixture at a temperature between 50‹ and 120‹ C., at a pressure sufficient to yield a coherent composite having a mean density of up to about ¢ ounce per cubic inch. The bark desirably has a water content of 10 to 40% by wt. Phosphates and/or fungicides may be present. The composite suitably is in the form of a sheet, especially in the shape of a disc with a radial slot.
