Abstract

787,036. Making milling cutters. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS. April 27, 1955 [April 27, 1954], No. 12162/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (3). An end-milling cutter comprises a bar having a uniform cross-section and an odd number of sides, each side having a cutting edge 10, and one end having integral cutting teeth 20. Both ends may have teeth, and also chip channels 24, 26 or a recess 28, Fig. 4, so that the tool may be held at either end in a two-part socket 34, 38. In a modification, the socket is shaped to hold a helically twisted cutter. The cutting edges are uniform along the cutter so that rotation has to be reversed when the cutter is turned endfor-end. Helically arranged chip-breaking grooves 29, Fig. 4, may be provided. The cutter blank may be a bar 30, Fig. 8, cut from a plate of tool steel or from a rolled section or from extruded tungsten carbide. The necessary grooves are then ground on the blank.
