Abstract

1373084 Milling cutters G A ELLIS 11 Nov 1971 [14 Nov 1970] 54290/70 Addition to 1200720 Heading B3K [Also in Division B5] A cutter tooth, e.g. for a rotary milling cutter comprises a tooth body 10, Fig. 1, having a tipreceiving face 11 and a carbide tip 12 secured to the tooth body at the face. The tip 12 or face 11 has a seating groove 15 and the tip or face and the groove, are so shaped that at least at the base of the groove is a space which is occupied by material securing the tip to the tooth body. In one embodiment the groove 15a, Fig. 2, is formed in the tooth body, and a protrusion 16a formed on a sintered tungsten carbide tip 12a. Various other shapes of groove and protrusion are disclosed. The tip may be secured by brazing, silver solder, or resinous adhesive material. In another construction the cutter teeth are provided on circular blades 18, Fig. 6, separated by a wedge-shaped spacer 19. The tips have trapezoidal cross-section and are secured in V- section grooves. The tip may have one or more cutting edges and be coated with P.T.F.E. In making the cutter teeth, a groove 15, Fig. 1, is cut by a grooving tool in the tooth body 10. and a sliver of metal 19 so produced may be used to locate the tip prior to securement.
