Class 20(4) A timber curtain wall construction comprises a framework joined by tongues and grooves and consisting of upright jambs, such as J, upper and lower rails, such as R, and mullins such as M, intermediate horizontal rails, such as I being secured at appropriate intervals between the vertical members by means of tie rods 6, 7 which are threaded through the intermediate rails I and corresponding holes in the jambs and mullins so that their threaded ends, which project through the sides of the framework, can be tensioned by means of nuts 8, spring washers 9, and pressure plates 10. The curtain walling is then fitted with panels, made e.g. of fibreboard, plywood, sheet asbestos, &c. or with double spaced panelling having the intervening space filled with insulating material if required. The intermediate rails I consist of three members 1, 2, and 3 joined together lengthwise by tongue and groove joints 4 and 5, the groove of each joint being deeper than the co-operating tongue to form an internal channel for one of the tie rods 6 or 7. Glazing panels may be also provided where windows are required. Adjacent frameworks can be joined together by angle cleats which are secured. by the nuts 8.
