Abstract

Styrene oxide is produced from styrene chlorohydrin by saponification with alkali metal hydroxide, the saponification being carried out, in the absence of organic solvents, with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide of more than 10 per cent by weight concentration at a temperature of from 50 DEG to 100 DEG C. for a reaction time of 3 to 100 minutes. Instead of using styrene chlorhydrin as starting material it is possible to use styrene chlorhydrin which contains a halogen atom in the nucleus or a styrene chlorhydrin which is substituted in the nucleus or in the chain or in both by an alkyl radical, preferably containing not more than 3 carbon atoms. In the examples a mixture of styrene chlorhydrin and styrene dichloride is treated with 25 per cent caustic soda solution and the resulting mixture is cooled and separated into two layers, the upper layer is washed and distilled; styrene oxide is obtained in the first fraction and styrene dichloride is obtained in the second fraction. The dichloride may be partially saponified to chlorhydrin which can then be converted to styrene oxide. Specification 786,732 is referred to.
