Abstract

786,630. Reciprocating pumps. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 29, 1955 [Dec. 30, 1954], No. 37197/55. Class 102(1). A pump, particularly a fuel injection pump, comprises a body 22 having a bore 32 forming an end wall 36, a plunger 38 reciprocable in the bore 32 by engagement with a cam 18 and a plug 58 of resilient material between the plunger 38 and the end wall 36, and a pump chamber 60, formed between the plug and the end wall, which communicates with an inlet 42 and an outlet 44. The plug 58 may be cylindrical while the bore 32 may taper slightly as at 59. The chamber may be formed by a recess in the end wall. Modifications are described in which plugs having variously shaped internal chambers are used. The bore 32 may be formed in a member screwed into the body 22, the member being tapered to locate a conical plug. The bore and end wall may be formed in a resilient member located in the body 22.
