Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXXIV] A connecting-rod and crank-shaft assembly, for compressors and like machines, comprising a crank-shaft 1 having one or more crank-pins 2, 3 and one or more detachable balance weights 10, is characterized in that connecting- rods 4 are mounted at least in pairs on each crank-pin and are formed with unitary big-ends 16, removal of the balance weights allowing the big-ends and connecting-rods to be moved along the crank-shaft to take them off and replace them in position. The big-ends are journalled on the crank-pins 2 &c., by means of rollers 17. When connecting up each pair of big-ends, the rollers 17 for one big-end are pushed into position with the connecting rod inclined to its crank-pin as shown in Fig. 2, and the final rollers are positioned with the connecting-rod straight; the second connecting-rod 'is moved into position, and as many rollers as possible are inserted with the connecting-rod inclined, the last rollers being inserted through a hole 18 finally closed by a plug (see Group XXXIV). As shown, the balance weights 10 are secured to the crankshaft 1 by bolts 13. Alternatively, the balance weights 10 may be secured by cotter-pins &c., or they may be force fits on the crank-shaft. As a modification, the balance weights may act as distance pieces between the ends of the crank-shaft 1 and its supporting bearings 29. An eccentric 20 at the centre of the crank-shaft operates an oil pump 22, and troughs 24 register with connecting-rod dippers 25 for splash lubrication.
