786,471. Setting up cartons. HEDLEY & CO., Ltd., T. Jan. 24, 1956 [Jan. 25, 1955], No. 2378/56. Class 94(1). A device for setting up collapsed cartons comprises a rotating helix, one end of which enters an open end of the carton to remove it from a stack and convey it along a path in contact with the helix, the helix having an increasing width which progressively squares the carton. In one embodiment, the ends 15 of two helices 13, 14 enter opposite ends of tubular cartons 5 on a stack conveying them towards the pockets of a chain conveyer 16 while in contact with locating rails 7. In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), a single helix is used for setting up, the helix comprising two wire spirals in lieu of a widening ribbon, the spirals progressively separating towards the discharge end. The rear wall of the cartons is engaged by a further helix consisting of a single wire spiral and positioned, as before, at the other end of the carton, this helix together with an auxiliary helix coaxial with the setting-up helix, assisting in conveying the cartons through the device. In a further embodiment (not shown), two opposed helices are of progressively reduced diameter towards the discharge end whereby they enter more deeply into the cartons as they travel towards the smaller ends.
