Abstract

785,920. Copy-planing. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. Dec. 23, 1955 [Jan. 1, 1955], No. 2/55, Class 83 (3) A machine for planing or shaping turbineblades &c. comprises a former-holder and a work-holder 14 rotatable in steps about axes parallel to the relative tool reciprocating- movement, the position of the tool 32 being controlled by an hydraulically-operated tracer 30, and the work and former being fed transversely simultaneously with the rotational movement. A knee 2 can be traversed along a slide 3 and carries a work-slide 8. Two work - pieces and a pattern are mounted by blocks 37, 39 in holders 14. Machining takes place between necks 41, 42. The holders are each mounted at one end on a flange 16 and at the other on a centre 12. The flanges 16 are rotated by worm - wheels 19 through a ratchet 22, a reversiblepawl 23 and linkage 25, 26, 28, operated after each stroke of the tool-ram 5. The ram supports a slide 4 carrying an hydraulic tracer-head 29 and two tools 32. The machining takes place with each tool-edge 45, Fig. 5, cutting on its tip, due to the combined transverse and rotational feedmovement, and the fact that the blade is eccentric to its axis of rotation. Means may be provided to cut on a smaller or greater scale. In a modification, the worm - wheels 19 are replaced by pinions, and a rack 50 is swung into engagement therewith. The rack is moved step-by-step by an hydraulic device 52, 54 controlled by a valve and a cam on a ratchet-operated drum. A further cam on the drum controls an hydraulic-piston to move the slide 8 transversely of the blades. The latter movements allow the rotational movement of the work to be varied and the work-axis 82B, Figs. 12 and 13, to be moved laterally to enable a tool to machine a shape 84 having abrupt changes of curvature. In a further modification, the work is reciprocated instead of the tools. Cutter releasing. The tools are relieved by an hydraulic device 89, 90, Fig. 14, controlled by a cam 96 and a valve 95, the tracer 30 always remaining in contact with the pattern 86. Lubricating tools. Cutting-compound is supplied by a pipe 43.
