Abstract

A catalytic oxidation in the gas phase, e.g. for the production of hydrogen cyanide or nitric oxide, is carried out by passing a suitable gaseous mixture downwards first through one or more platinum or platinum alloy gauges and then through a layer of granular refractory material coated with platinum or a platinum alloy, the gauge and layer of coated granular material being in contact and gauge and coating each containing at least 50 per cent platinum. The gauge and coating may contain 80-90 per cent platinum and 10-20 per cent rhodium. The refractory material may be beryllium aluminium silicate, silica, porcelain or alumina of 6-10 mesh, and may be used in a layer 0.75-1.5 in. thick. The gauze may be activated for subsequent use by interposing between a previously activated gauze and already used coated granular material, and carrying out reaction for 3-30 hours. Hydrogen cyanide may be produced from ammonia, natural gas and air in the volume ratio of 1 : 2 : 10.
