Abstract
A procedure for ammonia oxidation to produce nitrogen oxides in which a mixture of ammonia and an oxidation gas is contacted at elevated temperature and pressure with a plug of catalyst containing from about 10 to 50 layers of fine wire cloth of a platinum group metal, wherein a method of reducing the amount of platinum fine wire is provided which comprises determining the optimal amount of fine wire required to obtain at least about 95% conversion of ammonia to oxides of nitrogen, determine the pressure drop across said fine wire mesh plug of catalyst under the reaction conditions, replace approximately 1/3 to 2/3 of said fine wire mesh with a porous structure of a resistant non-precious metal to corrosion, said structure having a porosity such that the total pressure drop through the catalyst package, containing ne the remaining fine wire mesh and porous structure, is substantially equal to that of the optimal catalyst plug, and carry out the oxidation of ammonia.
