Abstract

1347491 Catalytic pad ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP 11 Jan 1971 [12 Jan 1970 11 Sept 1970] 1323/71 Heading B1F [Also in Divisions C1 and El] A catalyst pad, through which a mixture of ammonia and free-oxygen containing gas passes at an elevated temperature and pressure sufficient for the ammonia's oxidation, comprises firstly layers of platinum group metal gauze and secondly a foraminous structure of randomly oriented non-precious metal wires or strands resistant to the corrosive environment occuring during oxidation. The pressure drop across the pad is equal to that across another pad consisting only of a sufficient number of layers of platinum group metal gauze to obtain at least a 95% oxidation of ammonia, the number of layers being from 10 to 50, and possessing a weight of layer of platinum group metal gauze 1¢-3 times the weight in the catalyst pad above. The non-precious metal may be nickel and/or chromium containing alloys. The structure may be obtained by compression of knitted metal mesh. Filters and/or weld-barrier screens (e.g. of gold or gold alloy) may be inserted between the gauze and foraminous structure. The reaction mixture passed through the catalyst may have a temperature of from 650‹C to 1000‹C and a pressure from 50 to 150 p.s.i.
