337,680. Toniolo, C., and Azogeno Soc. Anon. per la Fabricazione dell Ammoniaca Sintetica e Prodotti Derivati. July 25, 1929, [Convention date]. Catalytic apparatus.- In catalyzers consisting of a plurality of superimposed layers of platinum or other metallic gauze, the layers which are first impinged upon by the reaction gases are made of coarser mesh than the subsequent layers which are less subject to attack by the gases. For example, a three-layer element may be of 700, 1500., and 3000 meshes per sq. cm. respectively. In a, modification coarser layers are placed on both sides of the finer layers, and the element is reversed when the first layers have become aged. Such an element may have four layers of 800, 3000, 3000, and 800 meshes respectively. The invention 'is particularly applicable to ammonia oxidation.
