Abstract
785,654. Spinning tubes. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd. April 20, 1956 [June 9, 1955], No. 16577/55. Class 83 (4). A method of reducing the diameter of a metal tube consists in subjecting the external surface of the tube to the action of a tool having an operative surface which is concave toward the tube and is formed by a generatrix parallel or slightly inclined to the axis of the tool, the nearest point on the said operative surface to the axis of the tube being at a.less distance from the tube axis than the external radius of the tube as unreduced, moving the tube in the direction of its axis and simultaneously producing relative rotation between the tool and the tube, whereby deformation of the tube along a helical path is effected. A tube reducing machine comprises a head 1 rotatably mounted on a fixed frame 2 and driven by a gear 5. A bush 6 in the head supports the unreduced portion of the tube 7 and a bush 8 supports the reduced portion 7a, these bushes 6 and 8 being fitted respectively within rings 9 and 10 by means of roller bearings 11 and 12. A further ring 13 located between and secured to the rings 9 and 10 encloses a diametrically adjustable tool holder 14 which carries the tubereducing tool 15. A micrometer head 21 assists in setting the desired eccentricity to the tool 15. The lead-in portion of the tool is flared and the exit edge slightly rounded. A plug 25 carried on a stem 26 supports the tube just before the points of application of the tool which may be rotatably mounted on the head 14 by means of a ball bearing 16 to impart a rolling action on the tube instead of a rubbing action. The machine may be used for reducing a cable sheath on to the cable core, a hollow plug being used in place of the plug 25. The tool may be inclined to the tube axis and reduction may be effected in stages by arranging two or more tools to operate on tandem. Alternatively, the tool may remain stationary and the tube rotated about an axis parallel, but eccentric to its own axis.
