Abstract
905,495. Drawing wire. COPPERWELD STEEL CO. May 5, 1960 [June 12, 1959], No. 15913/60. Class 83 (4). An apparatus for drawing clad wire and rod dry, particularly aluminium clad steel, comprises a capstan 14, a die assembly 12 and a rotating wiper 45 which applies a carrier such as castor oil to provide some surface tackiness on the wire. The die assembly is pivotally supported between brackets 16a and comprises an open top soap box, the front wall of which supports the dies. The wire travels in the direction of the arrows 35 and passes first through an entrance die 36, an intermediate die 37 and a drawing die 38. The dies 36 and 37 have bearing diameters 48 and 50 respectively which are each slightly larger than the outside diameter of the wire passing through them and the final cross-section is controlled by the die 38. In operation, the wire is dabbed with the carrier, picks up lubricant as it passes through the box and carries it into the dies 36 and 37. There is a considerable pressure build-up in the space between the bearing 48 and the passage 51 and a still greater pressure occurs between the bearing 50 and the passage 53 so that the aluminium cladding is drawn in this region. The die 38 is of tungsten carbide, the drawing speed is up to 400 feet per minute and the proportion of cladding is about 20% of the total cross-sectional area. The taper angle of the passages 52 and 53 is 12 to 16 degrees and the radial clearances in the dies 36 and 37 are preferably 0.0025 and 0.001 inch respectively.
