865,581. Extruding. SCHONDELMAIER, C. April 24, 1957 [April 25, 1956], No. 12999/57. Class 83 (4). A hollow metal work-piece with a non- cylindrical bore (including substantially cylindrical bores containing fluting, grooves, and/or lands) is produced by extruding the work-piece through the aperture of an extrusion die of which the inner bore-producing mandrel is freely rotatable with respect to the outer die member, but is located axially relative thereto. A prebored blank 6 is inserted into the upper portion 5a of a channel in a die member 5 and a grooved mandrel 2 is inserted into the bore of the blank so as to project a short distance through the blank. A ram adapted to be moved relative to the die 5 comprises a cylindrical hollow head 1 having a bottom 1a (Fig. 1) from which a tubular ram member 1b projects for insertion into the upper portion 5a of the die-channel to exert a coldmoulding pressure upon the blank 6. The mandrel 2 is supported in and guided by the inner wall of the tubular ram member and has supporting members 3, 4 secured at one end to its head, the mandrel and supporting members extending through apertures 1c, 1d, 1e, respectively, in the bottom 1a of the ram head. These supporting members engage with the upper surface of the die-member 5 to limit the movement of the mandrel into the die channel to a point where its lower end extends slightly beyond the level of the lower end of the conical portion 5c. The blank and mandrel are free to turn relative to each other about the same axis and for this purpose the supporting members 3, 4 are provided at their upper ends with bearing-means which rotatably support the head of the mandrel. These bearing means may either consist of suitable anti-friction bearings or the supporting members may be provided with semi-circular head portions which engage in an annular groove 2c in the head of the mandrel and thus form a pair of slide bearings.
