Abstract

785,566. Elevators for sacks. MILLER, K. Aug. 3, 1955, No. 22343/55. Class 78 (1). In a sack elevator comprising an inclined trough 8 up which the sacks 37 are pushed by cross bars 14 extending between a pair of endless chains 13, the cross bars are arranged to travel at such distance in front of the trough that they engage the outer lower corners of the sacks to enable the trough to be steeply inclined. The trough comprises side members 8a and skids 8b supported on brackets 8c. The trough is secured to side members 10 of a framework 10a, 10b through spacers 9. The framework is supported by a strut 6 on a base 5 having steerable wheels 7. The chains 13 are passed around upper and lower sprockets 12, 12a, the former being mounted on separate shafts 11 journalled between the side members 8a, 10, to leave the trough unobstructed, and driven by chain gearing from a shaft 26 mounted in brackets 25 on the framework. A secondary conveyer 4 is mounted on the shaft 26 by bearings 27 in its side members 30. The secondary conveyer comprises chains 29 passed around sprockets on shaft 26 and at the outer end of the members 30 and cross bars 32 extending between the chains for pushing the sacks up a shallow trough 33. Since cross bars 32 are close to trough 33 the latter is less steeply inclined than the trough 8. The height of its delivery end is adjusted by a stay 45 pivoted at 48 to the frame of conveyer 4, the lower end of the stay being guided in longitudinal slots in the strut 6 and being raised and lowered by a pair of cables 49 passing over pulleys 44 to a manually operated winch gear 38. Conveyer 4 may be lowered into an out-ofuse position against the strut 6. The conveyers are driven by a motor 24 driving shaft 26 through chain gearing 22. The chain gearing between shaft 26 and the shafts 11 is such that chains 29 travel faster than chains 13 so that sacks picked up by cross bars 32 are removed quickly from the cross bars 14 to prevent jamming.
