Abstract

1,218,761. Platform elevators; roller conveyers. COCHRAN WESTERN CORP. 24 Jan., 1968 [30 Jan., 1967; 4 Dec., 1967], No. 3661/68. Headings B8A, B8E and B8H. A platform elevator for use in loading and unloading aircraft comprises a platform structure 60 which is raised and lowered by screw and nut mechanisms in which the screw shafts are suspended from the tops of housings 16 on a base 10. The platform structure 60 comprises a platform 62, side walls 64 and a roller conveyer comprising idler rollers 68 and rollers 70 driven by a reversible motor 74 and an endless chain, Fig. 5 (not shown). Stops 102, 106 are provided at the ends of the roller conveyer, the stops 106 being retracted automatically as the platform structure reaches its lowermost position. The platform structure is pivotally connected to the screw and nut mechanisms, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), whereby the platform structure may be tilted by actuating the screw and nut mechanisms at one side only. The base 10 may be mounted on wheels. In a second embodiment, Fig. 14, the platform structure, including the roller conveyer, is secured to the chassis of a self-driven vehicle and is connected to the nuts in the screw shaft housings 174. When the chassis and platform are in the lowermost, broken-line position, rotation of the screw shafts causes lowering of the screw shafts and housings until the housings engage the ground whereafter further rotation of the screw shafts causes the platform and chassis to be raised to the full-line position. In a modification, the screw shafts are non- rotatable and the nuts are rotatably driven.
